São Miguel dos Milagres: What to Do on the Ecological Route
Everything about the paradise of Alagoas' Ecological Route
About the Destination
São Miguel dos Milagres is one of the most preserved and enchanting destinations on Brazil's northeastern coast. Located on the Ecological Route of Alagoas, between Maceió and Recife, the municipality is famous for its coral natural pools, crystal-clear emerald-green waters and its artisanal beachfront gastronomy and the marine life preserved in the coral reefs.
With around 8,000 inhabitants, São Miguel dos Milagres maintains a peaceful and authentic pace of life. Unlike mass tourism destinations, there are no large hotel chains or high-rise buildings here — what you'll find are charming guesthouses, exclusive vacation homes and a welcoming local community that preserves its traditions.

Natural pools formed by coral reefs
The municipality is part of the Costa dos Corais (Coral Coast), the second-largest coral barrier in the world, second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. This natural formation creates the famous natural pools that are revealed during low tide, transforming the sea into true natural aquariums of crystal-clear water.
The average temperature throughout the year ranges between 25°C and 30°C (77-86°F), with warm waters pleasant for swimming in any season. The tropical climate ensures sunshine most of the year, with a brief rainy season between June and July that, far from being a problem, brings more affordable prices and even emptier beaches.
How to Get There
São Miguel dos Milagres is located approximately 100 km north of Maceió, the capital of Alagoas. Access is relatively simple and can be done in three ways:
Also via Recife (REC) · ~3h30 drive
From Recife: ~280 km via BR-101 (3h30)
Best Time to Visit
São Miguel dos Milagres can be visited year-round, but each period has its own characteristics:
Average temperature: 25-30°C (77-86°F) year-round. The sea water is always warm and inviting.
What to Do in São Miguel dos Milagres
Natural Pools

The natural pools are the main and most iconic attraction of São Miguel dos Milagres. Formed by coral reefs just meters from the coast, they are revealed during low tide, creating pools of crystal-clear water with depths between 50 cm and 1.5 meters — perfect for swimming, floating and observing marine life.
The tour is done by raft or small boat, lasting about 2 hours. Local raftsmen know the best spots and ensure a safe and memorable experience. It's common to spot colorful fish, starfish, sea urchins and, with luck, small turtles.
ATV Tour

Exploring the trails of São Miguel dos Milagres by ATV is one of the most fun experiences in the region. The tour follows paths through coconut groves, deserted beaches and picturesque villages, revealing landscapes only accessible by dirt trails.
Lasting 2 to 3 hours, the route may include stops at isolated beaches, natural viewpoints and historical sites. It's suitable for all ages (with a licensed driver) and perfect for those who enjoy adventure with a touch of adrenaline.
Cycling the Ecological Route

The Ecological Route of Alagoas is a 120 km stretch of preserved beaches connecting Paripueira (near Maceió) to the Pernambuco border. Cycling along this route means immersing yourself in endless coconut groves, deserted beaches and fishing villages.
By bicycle, you can explore nearby beaches like Porto de Pedras, Tatuamunha and Passo de Camaragibe. The terrain is relatively flat, with dirt and compact sand paths along the shore. Ideal for rides in the early morning or late afternoon.
Chapel of Milagres

The Chapel of Milagres is one of the most iconic settings on the Ecological Route. Sand floor, wooden benches and the sea as a backdrop — a minimalist architecture that became a destination wedding reference in Northeast Brazil. But you don't need to get married to appreciate it: the seaside chapel is one of the most photographed images in Alagoas and an invitation to contemplation on any visit.
